This study examines small to medium -sized businesses in the City of Pacific Grove, CA, and describes how students from California State University, Monterey Bay worked with local businesses to enroll and complete certification through the California Green Business Network. We spoke with owners and employees from 19 businesses, and of those 19, 5 of them enrolled in the Green Business Program. We assisted two businesses in completing the checklist for certification that includes measures to improve the future of our planet and the health of our communities. Two businesses were still in the process of completing the checklist, one of them became unresponsive, and one was not suitable. We were successful in our efforts to establish partnerships with community stakeholders by reaching out to local agencies for support. We worked with the City of Pacific Grove to present at their Economic Improvement Commission meeting; Greenwaste to provide waste audits for businesses; and Sustainable Pacific Grove to disseminate information about the program and recommend best candidates, among other partnerships. Our group intends to leave a lasting framework for future business owners to easily enroll in the program and implement the most sustainable business practices by establishing and maintaining partnerships between the Green Business Program and local agencies.
