I live in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The geography of Tomohon is located in the Asian portion of the Pacific Ring of Fire, flanked by two active volcanoes, those are Mount Lokon (1,689 m or 5,541 ft) and Mount Mahawu (1,311 m or 4,301 ft). The area is mostly made of young volcanic rock, with a composition of andesitic and basaltic tuff, and is of a brittle nature and easily eroded.
The material component of the volcanic eruption with a cool temperature increase the fertile soil, and for the people taking advantage to produces fruits, vegetables, and flowers. In the southern, there’s a Lake Linow, a naturally formed crater from volcanic eruption. Around the lake, there are various geothermal manifestation such as hot springs, fumarole, and also mud pool.
The threat of volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, natural destruction, chance of crop damage and climate change is still not a serious concern.
In the last few years, I have built servers and systems specifically for IoT data communications with open source applications, of course with existing facilities in the government. Then the sensors and test equipment based on Arduino and other devices that are cheap and easy to get.
My university partner has an academic background in data processing, geology and related. He works as a lecturer at a local university here. I think he’s a perfect match for my goals.
We have formed a small team of public servants. Some are very experienced in the field of urban planning, there are also other team members who have technical skills such as welding, carpentry, computer networking, and other menial jobs.
My goal, i want to collect as much data as possible from all disaster elements to be processed and then used as consideration for the leaders of this city to make important decisions. If the basic system that has been formed (server, IoT node’s and clusters) and it is certain that it goes well, i want to expand to integrated IoT systems for agriculture with these existing devices, more specifically from tissue culture laboratories (automatic setting of temperature, humidity, light level or color spectrum) to automatic acclimatization and possibly to fertilization and pest management. Or even another possibility that could be applied.
