The Institute of Political Studies (IEP) of the UNAB was created in 1998 in response to the regional demand for an interdisciplinary and critical analysis of the political and social phenomena of the region and the country. The Institute is interested in contributing to local sustainable development, regional, national, and international, leading training, research, and social projection activities of high impact and quality.

The IEP, a part of the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences of the UNAB, is not just an academic institution. It’s a hub of collaboration and innovation. With two recognized research groups and a range of continuing education and postgraduate degrees, the IEP has fostered a culture of excellence. This culture is further enhanced through the execution of high-quality and relevant research and intervention projects, developed in close alliance with key actors from the government, business, and organized civil society sectors. Leadership

The director of the IEP, María Eugenia Bonilla, has a doctorate in Rule of Law and Global Governance. Maria Eugenia is a Colombian economist specializing in business administration for more than twelve years, linked to national and international research on security, development, public policies, and migration. She is the Academic and Scientific Coordinator of the Doctorate in Sustainability, the Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Development, the Master’s Degree in Political Science, and the leader of the Peace, Post-Conflict and Reconciliation line of the Political Science Research Group.

Currently, the IEP has focused its efforts on research into the impacts and expectations of the communities, victims, and those appearing to participate in the actions and repair and restoration works carried out in the east of the country within the framework of the process. of transitional justice that is carried out in Colombia. This research, carried out with resources from the Ministry of Sciences of Colombia and the support of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) of Colombia and the local authorities of Santander and Norte de Santander, seeks to contribute to the application of the executive’s peace programs: National and the peace commitments emanating from the peace agreements signed in the country in 2016.

The program also has a significant research agenda on migration, transparency, open government, and regional electoral political analysis. This is consistent with our vision of being a leading Institute in political science at the regional, national, and international university levels, constructing a more just and equitable State supported by research, advice, and training from the area. Political science, both at the local and national levels, contributes to the formation and renewal of the ruling class within the ethics and values of human dignity.
