The City of La Mesa collaborated with San Diego State University interior architecture students and faculty to research and develop design concepts for three project case study sites that are all located within the downtown village corridor and/or zoned for mixed-use urban. All sites are zoned for urban design overlay and are located along the transit corridor. These sites are currently underutilized and present an opportunity to enrich the City of La Mesa through the development of modern mixed-use sites. Students worked in eight teams to study the unique history, demographics, and culture of La Mesa, as well as the city’s vision for the future. They developed and proposed residential and commercial site plans, building plans, renderings, and created commercial business plans for optimal use of the sites. Although each team presented distinct ideas, a shared vision among the proposals is the importance of creating urban spaces that thoughtfully integrate commercial and residential experiences through a focus on community and the promotion of small, local businesses.
