Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has collaborated with Penang Green Council (PGC) to organise a symposium on zero waste to enhance students’ and community’s understanding on zero waste. The symposium was successfully organised on 13th November 2021 via online platform at Facebook@usmcgss. CGSS USM and PGC have invited a few experts from Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), Zero Waste Malaysia, Consumer Association of Penang (CAP), and Hara Makers to give an idea about zero waste and how to practice zero waste in daily life to the participants. The symposium is part of a training session for the students in terms of knowledge and idea on waste management before their physical session with the community. The symposium is also open to the interested public as well as the target community during the physical session by the students. At the end of the symposium, the participants have generally learned the concepts of waste management, zero waste, recycling, waste reduction, 5Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle, and composting. The participants have been exposed on waste segregation and home composting.
